My Prime Day Strategy: What I'm Buying and How I Avoid Overspending During Sales

Amazon Prime Days are coming soon - June 23 to June 26. I get a little excited every time I receive Amazon’s email about Prime Day. I even tell other relatives and friends when Prime Days are happening so they won’t miss out. I search Amazon’s site for deals but only purchase if it’s something I truly need. I’ve learned that the biggest savings often come from what you don’t buy.

House of Six is all about saving money, so before I add anything to my cart, I follow a few simple rules to stay focused on my family's needs and avoid impulse purchases. These rules have saved me money over the years, and they help ensure that every dollar I spend is working hard for our household.

Shopping on Prime Days?

Follow 5 simple rules to stay focused on your purchases.

Rule #1: Never Buy Something Just Because It's on Sale

A sale isn't a bargain if you weren't planning to buy the item in the first place. Prime Day can create a sense of urgency, but I always remind myself that spending $50.00 to save $20.00 is still spending $50.00. Before clicking "Add to Cart," ask yourself whether you would buy the item if it weren't on sale.

Rule #2: Compare Prices First

Not every Prime Day deal is the best deal. I like to check prices at a few other retailers before making a purchase because sometimes a "sale" price isn't as special as it appears. Taking a few extra minutes to compare prices can prevent costly impulse purchases.

Rule #3: Shop Your Home Before Shopping Amazon

Before buying anything, take a look around your house. You may already own something that serves the same purpose or have an item tucked away in a closet that you've forgotten about. Using what you already have is almost always the cheapest option.

Rule #4: Stick to Your List

I create a list of items I genuinely need before Prime Day begins and do my best to stick to it. Having a plan helps me avoid getting distracted by flashy deals that don't fit my budget or my family's needs. Even when “Prime Days” are not occurring, I make a list before I shop online. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, having a list of what I actually need to buy saves me from going “rogue” and buying what I don’t need. I think I have shiny object syndrome. Lol!

Stick to your list

Create a list of what you really need to purchase and stick to it.

Rule #5: Focus on Items You'll Use Regularly

The best purchases are often the ones that make everyday life easier or save money over time. I look for practical items that will be used again and again rather than trendy gadgets that might end up collecting dust after a few weeks, like the Mandoline slicer that my daughter bought because she thought it would make prepping healthy lunches easier, only to sit in the back of my kitchen cupboard for ages now.

What Items Would I Buy During Prime Days?

Having talked about the “rules to keep your spending in check”, there are some items you might want to look for that are worth checking out if the prices are lower during Amazon’s Prime Days. Items like kitchen and home organization, laundry soap, school supplies, emergency preparedness items, or even new items you may have had your eye on and want to try out.

We just bought a SodaStream. My son was constantly buying cases of Bubly and S. Pellegrino. We even sat down and calculated that having the SodaStream and even refilling the CO2 canisters would be cheaper than continually purchasing cases of sparkling water. https://amzn.to/4oC8U6U Plus, I bought two bottles so we always have some water ready in the fridge. https://amzn.to/4uDEItl It’s paid off already. My son has stopped buying the expensive sparkling water and is using the SodaStream every day.

I love doing a bit of gardening and trying to grow some of my own food. Usually, I buy plants from Costco to get started. This year, I decided to start everything from seed, and I love the Oh! Canada Seeds Store for my seeds. I’ve used them in previous years and always have good luck with their seeds. Resolve Laundry Stain Remover is a good addition to your laundry items. I find this spray works wonderfully for removing stains from clothes before washing. I’ve used Resolve for many years. I’ve tried other stain removers, but they don’t work as well as this one. https://amzn.to/4xpCC2N

I’ve tried this Teeccino Herbal Tea Sampler, and I’m really enjoying this in the evening. These teas taste like coffee, are all-natural, and contain no caffeine. This sampler has four flavors: French Roast, Hazelnut, Vanilla Nut, and Maca Chocolate. It’s a nice hot drink to enjoy anytime, but I really like it in the evening. It seems to help me avoid eating after dinner, since I’m trying to lose weight right now. https://amzn.to/446yLdA

I use a lot of single-serve powdered drink mixes, and now, especially with our SodaStream, they make for a tasty way to “zhuzh” up your water. I just bought these Skittles singles this past week. It’s one of our regular purchases. https://amzn.to/3QEhhlL

This is a sample of some things I would look for on sale during Prime Days. Items you can truly use or enjoy are worth looking to see if you can get them on sale during this time - June 23 to June 26.

My goal on Prime Day isn't to buy more things. It's to spend wisely on things my family will actually use. A good deal should improve your life, save you money, or solve a problem. If it doesn't do one of those things, it's probably not a deal worth chasing.
