Can a Simple Life Still Feel Abundant?

When people hear the word luxury, they often picture expensive vacations, designer handbags, or gourmet meals at fancy restaurants. While those things can obviously be enjoyable, I've learned over the years that some of life's greatest luxuries cost very little.

As my husband and I built our life together on one income, we couldn't afford extravagant purchases, but that didn't mean our home couldn't feel warm, welcoming, and special. It isn't just about saving money; it's about creating a home that feels peaceful, welcoming, and full of gratitude. In fact, some of my favourite moments have been the simplest.

Here are a few of the small luxuries that have brought comfort and coziness to our home over the years.

Fresh Bread or Homemade Cookies

One of my favourite smells in the house is the smell of something baking in the oven.

You don't need to make elaborate desserts. A simple loaf of bread, a batch of chocolate chip cookies, or even muffins on a Saturday morning can make the whole house feel cozy. Lately, I’ve been baking once a week on a Saturday. I may make a couple of different desserts, such as a banana bread and some chocolate chip cookies. I’ve just started using a new recipe for a chocolate chip cookie pizza. So, instead of making individual cookies, the dough is baked on a pizza tray (I use my clay pizza tray, which gives the cookie pizza a nice crunch on the outside and is moist on the inside) and then sliced like a pizza. Much easier and more fun to eat.

Sally’s Baking website features easy, delicious recipes. Here’s the Chocolate Chip Cookie Pizza recipe that I use.

The best part? Everyone benefits from the wonderful aroma and something delicious to eat - perfect with an afternoon cup of tea.

A Good Book and a Quiet Afternoon

There's something wonderfully peaceful about curling up with a good book while the rest of the world carries on outside. Whether it's a favourite novel borrowed from the library or a well-loved book from my own shelf, reading has always felt like a little vacation without leaving home.

Add a comfortable chair, a soft blanket, and a cup of tea or coffee, and you've created an afternoon that feels richer than many expensive outings.

If you’re reading inside (over the summer, I always read out on my deck), add a cozy fireplace like the ones you see on TV or Netflix. It may be fake, but it’s really the crackling of the firewood that I love while I’m reading.

https://amzn.to/4yeXquy I’m currently reading The Women by Kristin Hannah. I can’t put it down, but I love all of Kristin Hannah’s books. If you haven’t read one of her books, give this one a try.

A good book, quiet afternoon

Simple things can make your life feel luxurious even though the cost is very low.

Coffee on My Deck

Some mornings, the greatest luxury is taking 15 or 20 quiet minutes before the day begins.

A mug of coffee, the sound of birds, and fresh morning air have a way of slowing life down. Those few peaceful moments remind me that contentment doesn't have to come with a price tag.

Fresh Flowers from the Garden

You don't need a florist to brighten your kitchen table.

A handful of flowers picked from your own garden can make a room feel cheerful and welcoming. Sometimes the simplest bouquet is the prettiest. Grow peonies in your garden - these make beautiful bouquets, and since they are perennials, they will grow every year on their own.

Soft Blankets and Cozy Corners

One of the easiest ways to make a home feel inviting is to create a cozy spot where someone naturally wants to sit.

A comfortable chair, a favourite blanket, and good lighting can transform an ordinary corner into your favourite place in the house. It's amazing how something so simple can make home feel like a retreat.

https://amzn.to/4wtMJCo I love a cozy sherpa fleece throw blanket. I have a couple of them. They are so warm and easy to throw into the washing machine and dryer.

Music Playing in the Background

Quiet instrumental music, classic hymns, soft jazz, or your favourite playlist can completely change the atmosphere of a home. I often find that music makes ordinary tasks like cooking dinner, cleaning, or folding laundry feel calmer and more enjoyable. I always put on soft music while I’m reading too. It makes reading much more relaxing.

I have a couple of links below to background music you can try. Lately, I’ve been listening to 1940s/1950s nostalgic vintage music like the one below:

Romantic 1950s Spring Cafe in Amalfi

There are many cozy reading music channels too, like this one:

Sometimes, no music but rain and thunder playing in the background is very soothing.

A Tidy Living Room

This one might surprise you because it doesn't cost a penny.

There's something deeply satisfying about walking into a room that's been straightened up. Fluffed pillows, folded blankets, and clear surfaces create a sense of peace that expensive decorating can't always buy. Sometimes 15 minutes of tidying provides more enjoyment than buying something new, and it brings a sense of appreciation for what you already own.

A Library Card

If I had to choose one of the best bargains available, it would be the library.

Books, audiobooks, movies, magazines, and community programs are all available for little to no cost. Every visit feels like coming home with treasures, and it never gets old. For the old and the young, your community library has something for everyone.

Lighting a Candle at the End of the Day

I don't burn candles every day, especially in the summer, so they feel like a little treat when I do.

On a cool evening, lighting a favourite candle while reading or watching a movie turns an ordinary night into something that feels special.

Little rituals like this help mark the transition from a busy day to a restful evening.

Sharing a Simple Meal Together

Some of my favourite family memories happened around an ordinary dinner table. The meal wasn't fancy. Sometimes it was soup, homemade bread, or a casserole that stretched to feed everyone. What made those meals memorable wasn't the menu. It was the conversation, the laughter, and simply being together.

Those evenings remind me that the richest moments in life often cost the least.

Luxury Looks Different Here

As I've gotten older, my definition of luxury has changed.

  • Luxury isn't always something you buy.

  • Sometimes it's having time to read another chapter.

  • It's sitting outside on a summer evening.

  • It's hearing laughter from the next room.

  • It's a clean kitchen after dinner.

  • It's knowing the people you love are gathered under one roof.

Those are the moments I treasure most, and they cost you nothing at all.

Final Thoughts

One of the beautiful things about living frugally is that it teaches you to notice the abundance that's already around you.

You don't need an expensive home to create a peaceful one. You don't need a large budget to make ordinary days feel special.

Some of life's greatest luxuries are already waiting for us. We simply have to slow down long enough to enjoy them. And in my experience, those are the luxuries that stay with us the longest.
