People often assume that living frugally means buying the cheapest version of everything. Over the years, I've learned that's not always true. Sometimes the best way to save money is to spend a little more today so you don't have to replace something again next year.

When my husband and I were raising our family, we didn't have unlimited money to spend. Every purchase mattered. Because of that, we learned to ask a simple question before buying something: "Will this last?"

If the answer was yes, we were often willing to spend a little more because we knew we'd be buying quality instead of buying the same item over and over again.

Here are some things I've found are worth investing in.

Solid Wood Furniture

Good furniture can last for decades. Solid wood tables, dressers, and bookshelves often survive moves, growing families, and everyday life far better than inexpensive particleboard furniture. Particleboard furniture is cheaper by far, but it will fall apart. Believe me, I’ve seen a bookcase made of particleboard that folded like a deck of cards when it was moved.

It may cost more initially, but solid wood furniture lasts thirty years instead of five; it's usually money well spent.

When my husband and I married, our in-laws bought us our bedroom furniture as our wedding gift. It is solid oak and was purchased from a company that employed the Amish to make the furniture. That furniture has held up and looks the same as when it was first bought. That’s 36 years ago!

I know some people grow bored with their furniture, but buying certain furniture once saves so much in the long run. Change up things like your comforter, pillows, or area rugs to add a different style to your room.

A Comfortable Mattress

You spend about a third of your life sleeping.

Similar to your bedroom furniture, a quality mattress isn't just an investment in your home. It's an investment in your health. Better sleep can improve your energy, comfort, and overall well-being for years to come.

Quality Cookware

A good set of pots and pans can last a lifetime if you care for them properly. Instead of replacing warped pans every few years, buying quality cookware once often ends up costing less in the long run.

My in-laws gave us a set of three surgical stainless steel pots that they purchased when they immigrated to Canada back in the late 1960s. We use them every day.

At a garage sale, I noticed a pot similar to the one we owned. Sure enough, it was the same type of surgical stainless steel pot we had at home. The woman sold it to us for $0.75 and went back into her house to find the lid for us! I don’t think she realized what she was selling because it’s difficult to find the type of stainless steel that makes up these pots.

Another quality cookware item is cast iron frying pans. They’re great for cooking, and if you season them and care for them properly, they will last forever.

Buying quality means you can keep these items for a long time without having to rebuy.

Kitchen Knives

A sharp, well-made knife makes cooking easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Rather than buying inexpensive knives that quickly become dull, consider investing in one or two quality knives that can be sharpened and used for many years. I received two quality knives at my bridal shower and still use them to this day.

A knife can be used for everything in the kitchen - no need for the slicers and dicers, and it’s much easier to wash and put away when you’re finished.

Good Shoes

I've learned that cheap shoes often wear out quickly and aren't always kind to your feet.

A well-made pair of everyday shoes may cost more, but they often provide better comfort, better support, and longer life.

Not only will they be more comfortable, but they will last a long time.

Winter Coats

Living in Canada, a warm winter coat isn't a luxury - it's a necessity.

Buying a quality coat that lasts for many winters can be far more economical than replacing a cheaper one every couple of years. Spend the money one year, and the coat will last you for many years.

Small Kitchen Appliances You'll Actually Use

Not every gadget is worth buying, but some truly earn their place.

A dependable slow cooker, stand mixer, or quality blender can be used for years and help you prepare more meals at home, saving money on takeout. I use my slow cooker and my KitchenAid more times than I can count.

Not a small appliance, but one I wanted to mention is buying a good freezer. We’ve had a small chest freezer that my parents owned, was passed to my sister who had it for several years, then passed to my in-laws when they moved to a condo, and then passed to us when we moved to the home that we have lived in for 27 years. I can’t believe it has lasted that long, but (knock on wood) it’s still going strong.

Yard and Garden Tools

If you enjoy gardening or maintaining your yard, quality tools are often worth every penny.

Well-made shovels, rakes, pruning shears, and hoses tend to last much longer than bargain versions, making outdoor chores easier and reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Luggage

Whether you're traveling once a year or several times, sturdy luggage can last for decades.

Cheap suitcases often fail at the worst possible moment with broken wheels, torn fabric, or stuck zippers. A durable suitcase is one purchase you'll appreciate every time you travel.

Buy It Once, Buy It Well

Not everything in your home needs to be top-of-the-line. There are plenty of things where buying the less expensive option makes perfect sense, but for the items you use every day, or hope to own for many years, it often pays to choose quality over the lowest price.

Frugal living has never meant buying the cheapest thing available. To me, it's about getting the best value for every dollar that you do spend. Sometimes that means waiting a little longer, saving a little more, and buying something that will still be serving your family many years from now.

In the end, that's not spending more.

It's spending wisely.
